How is Chelsea Performing after spending €200m+ ?

Frank Lampard's Chelsea has spent nearly €250m in the transfer window to start a new journey.

Chelsea's total transfer cost in 2019 is 200 million+

Chelsea had spent more than any other club in Europe after FIFA lifted their transfer ban in 2019. They bought Timo Werner for €53m from RB Leipzig, paid €40m to Ajax for Hakim Ziyech, €80m for Kai Havertz to Bayer Leverkusen. For defense they bought Ben Chilwell from Leicester City for €50m and brought Thiago Silva. They also had to buy a goalkeeper  for €24m from Rennes due to Kepa's poor performance.

But now everyone's asking if they have really made any progress after signing some elite players and have they meet the expectations? Chelsea have had a good start this season. They remain undefeated in the champions league although they're struggling in the premier league. Surprisingly, they haven't beaten any top 10 sides yet in the league. As half of the season has already passed, we've rated the new comers based on their performance, stats, impact on the game.

Timo Werner

Timo Werner's performance for Chelsea is average

Rating :5/10

Performance : Average

The expectations were very high when he signed for Chelsea but he's yet to show why he was brought. He was sensational last season for RB Leipzig where he scored 34 goals in 42 matches. He is a regular starter for Chelsea this season and has scored 8 goals in  20 games which is very poor compared to his last season. On the contrary, his colleague Olivier Giroud who has scored 9 goals is the top scorer for Chelsea right now. He only started in 6 matches. Werner earlier said that the league (EPL) was very competitive and he was adapting to this new environment. He still has time to prove himself as the season is long.

Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech is missing important games for Chelsea due to injury

Chelsea announced the deal before the end of 2019/20 season as many big clubs were after his signature. He has been brought for his playmaking ability. However, he's hardly been seen on the pitch this season due to injuries. He's only started in 7 matches and has 2 goals and 3 assists. It is hard to rate him as he's not played enough.

Kai Havertz

Kai Havertz is the biggest flop signing in Europe this season.

Rating : 3/10

Performance : Very Poor

Well, Chelsea broke their bank to sign him but currently he's the biggest flop signing in Europe. His world class performance attracted the big clubs last season but now he is performing more like a average player. He has scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists for Chelsea in 20 appearances this season. Has Chelsea made a mistake by spending €80m on him or he will silence the criticism?

Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell is now a vital player for Chelsea

Rating : 7/10

Performance : Very Good

Brought for £45m from Leicester, he's really lived up to expectation. He's adapted to team very well and become vital both in attack and defense. He's now one of best left backs in the premier league.

Thiago Silva

Thiago Silve is one of the best signings of Chelsea

Rating : 8/10

Performance : Excellent

He's built a wall and fixed the problem in defense for the Blues this season for Chelsea. As Chelsea didn't have to pay anything for him, he can be called one of the best signings. There's also rumor that Chelsea wants to extend his contract till 2022.

Edouard Mendy

Edouard Mendy is now one of the best Goalkeepers

Rating : 8/10

Performance : Excellent

The best signing this season as he has had 10 clean sheets in 18 matches for the club. It was an emergency signing due to Kepa's horrible performances. Chelsea paid around €80m in 2018 making Kepa the most expensive goalkeeper in history. But he's turned out a nightmare for Lampard's side and his market value has dropped to 15m. On the other hand, Mendy's transfer fee is £22m which is quite low compared to his performance on the pitch.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is now under pressure as they are winless in 3 matches. They've also been defeated 3-1 by Arsenal which is their worst defeat this season. They are 6th in the league after 16 games and 7 points behind Liverpool who are at the top of the table. The Blues have ended the 2020 with a draw with Aston Villa. If they don't improve, they might miss top 4. It will be a big headline if they don't qualify for the champions league after spending 200m+. They have so many challenges ahead with the champions league returning in february as they will face Atletico Madrid who are in great form this season. This game might decide Frank Lampard's future. Can they beat Diego Simeone's defense and advance to the next stage. Find out here.
